We decided to book a table as we hadn't been here for a year or more. It was always the "go to" restaurant for birthdays and special occasions. With a strict code, The China Rose, makes the dining experience very pleasant. I feel the dressing up for dinner is part of the mystique of the place.
Our table was relatively early (6.30), but a good sign was that the restaurant was already busy, but not overcrowded. As per usual, we took our place in the lounge area to peruse the menu and order our drinks. It seemed that they have had an intake of new staff as whilst our food order was being taken, our wine came and the server interrupted the waiter taking our food order and then manage to spill the wine when pouring. He did clean it up and apologise, and it didn't affect the night. I think the service isn't the same as it once was, but still a cut above other places I've visited in recent months.
The food was excellent and large portions, satisfying four big adult appetites. The starters were presented perfectly and cooked just right (squid, spare ribs, seaweed, duck). The mains were brought out in reasonable time and once again cooked to perfection.
I would recommend anyone who has a reason to want a special meal, with a large variety of dishes and a nice dining atmosphere to stop here. It may not be the lowest cost option, but in my opinion it is has high value for money.
