I had some work to get done before we flew, so we went off to the busy BA Lounge in the North Terminal at Gatwick. It was busy but we managed to just about find some space near the PCs so I could participate in the conference call and finish the other pieces of work I needed to do. After a busy time in the lounge, we headed off to Vienna.
After a fairly uneventful plane journey, where we managed to get row 1, we arrived in Vienna. A short Uber journey into the city centre, we arrived at the Intercontinental Wein. A 1960s building, the outside isn't as nice as the architecture in the buildings in the centre, but it's what inside that counts. Greeted with a dark wood grand lobby, we arrived at the same time as an American tour group. The front desk sent us up to the Club Lounge on the top floor to check in. This was a different world from the front desk area.
We received our key and a welcome gift - some chocolates - and headed off to our room. I only booked a standard room, which was not a bad size but not as large as the Crowne Plaza at Gatwick.
The bed was one of the most comfortable I've been on in a hotel room, although the hotel only offers a turndown service on request our room was turned down each night.
A nice feature was the bathroom, which had a separate toilet. This made the bathroom, although small, accessible by both of us. The amenities of iron, ironing board mini-bar and safe were in the corridor between the main room and the toilet. The mini-bar was well stocked and not unduly expensive.
We had club lounge access and so ate breakfast there each morning and lunch each day. We also had a couple of drinks during the happy hour. We also sampled the cocktails at the bar, which were very good and served with a bit of pride by the bar staff. Overall the staff were friendly, yet professional and spoke a very good level of English.
On Saturday we spent some time walking by the Danube, Wein and also around the city centre. My wife even found a shop to add to her Converse All Star shoe collection.
The only thing I didn't like was the in room water wasn't replenished as part of the room service, which it should have been, but other than that it was a good hotel and the central location makes sightseeing easy.
